Hummingbirds - 4/52

When we first moved into the new house we noticed a little hummingbird occasionally coming by to sample the flowers in the front flower bed.  Jason promptly made his tasty vanilla flavored hummingbird food and now we're up to six hummingbirds all fighting for the feeder, all day, every day.  Earlier this week I was out on the front porch and decided to see if I could get some decent photos of them.  Being hand held they didn't turn out too bad, though next time I want to tripod the camera and use off camera flash, rather than the speedlight in the hotshoe.

These photos were taken with a Nikon D80; 18 - 200mm VR Nikon lens; SB600 speedlight on the camera hotshoe.

We have our first water lily bloom!  It's not fully opened yet, but I was too excited to wait.  I'll post more photos once it's full.  One of the white blooms is getting close to opening as well and I believe we have a pink lily in there somewhere.  The pond is really starting to shape up.  We got a few plants around the perimeter, a few water plants inside and just need to finish the rock work around the edges.  It's amazing how many new critters have been in the yard since we put in the big pond.  We have a resident bullfrog, purple martins, dragonflies and all kinds of water striders!  It's awesome!

Ahhh a nice 75 degree day in Kentucky. I've got spring fever already! And so does this little Carolina Chickadee!

So now that the weather is trying to get nice it's high time to break out the camera for some wildlife shots.  I've been capturing photos of our backyard habitat critters for the last year or so and finally decided it was high time to get a good wildlife lens to really do the job up right.  So after much research, off to Murphy's Camera I went to purchase a new Nikon 80-400mm VR lens.  Since I've had it it's rained, rained and rained some more...go figure.  But I did manage to get a little juvenile woodpecker to look half-way decent and in focus...but I have lots of practicing to do.

Speaking of practice, now I have a partner in crime!  Jason decided he'd like to join me in my wildlife jaunts around the yard, local parks, zoo's, camping trips, etc and decided to bite the bullet and buy him a camera as well.  So he is now the proud owner of a Nikon D80 (better than mine!  *sob*) and a nice 200-500mm Tamron lens!  So this weekend we're off to the Louisville Zoo to test out our new goods!
